Description

Ramdung Peak is a trekking peak situated in the Rolwaling valley amongst many other neighboring peaks. This region is a relatively new trekking route so there is quite a bit of mystery attached to it. This region is greatly blessed with natural landmarks that include snowy mountains and deep valleys, and glacial moraines. This 15-day Ramdung Peak Climbing trip will definitely give you the thrills as you will observe the glacial lake of Tsho Rolpa and finally the summit of Ramdung Peak.

The adventure begins with a vehicle transfer to Gonghar. You will pass by various hilly villages of Nepal famed for their beauty. After arriving at Gonghar we will begin our trek straight away to Simigaon. The trek will take you through many suspension bridges over the gorges. From Simigaon we make our way to Daldung La. On the way, are many Sherpa hamlets, with the locals going about their traditional way of life. Daldung La itself is a larger traditional village and you can notice local activities such as cheese making. From Daldung La, we trek along the hills carved by the Rolwaling River to Beding. Beding is also a picturesque village on a hill slope, and some traditional stonewalled and tiled roof houses can be seen here. There are many short hikes that can be done for acclimatization from Beding. We will then head to the summer settlement of Na. There are beautiful meadows sometimes with wildflowers on them along the way. The village of Na itself is surrounded by green potato fields. Above Na, we pass into the glacial valleys of upper Rolwaling. The landscape is rocky and snowy as we follow the glacial path up to the Tsho Rolpa Lake. After exploring the magnificent Lake, we will be returning to Na the next day. Then we make our push to the Ramdung Peak basecamp. The terrain is rough and snowy, but it’s more than compensated by the fact that there are amazing panoramic views of the mountains all around. We will trek through the high camp to the summit of Ramdung peak. After witnessing the penultimate views of the trip, we will retrace our steps down to Basecamp. Then it’s retracing our steps back from Na, Beding, Daldung La and Simigaon back to Kathmandu with a vehicle transfer. The best season to travel would be the spring season, where the snow conditions may not be too worse and the roads up are not adversely affected by the monsoon.

We will have to wake up early today. This is to avoid traffic which can get pretty rowdy on the afternoons. We will make our way to Gongar through the Dolakha district headquarters. We will wind around hills covered in lush subtropical vegetation. From Gongar we will trek to the village of Simigaon. The trek leads you through green hills and well-drawn paths carved on the forest trail. There are many Sherpa settlements along the way, with tin roof houses and grey mud covering the walls. The Gaurishankar Mountain (7,134) and its range would be the predominant view behind the walls of the Rolwaling valley. We will eventually arrive at Daldung La, a beautiful village that sits beside a hill slope. You may also notice traditional Yak cheese-making sheds on the village. Overnight in Daldung La.

We can also see some old-fashioned houses here that are made of stone and tiled roofs. Overnight in Beding

Day 05: Acclimatization Day
Since it is the last permanent settlement on our trek towards the Ramdung Peak, we will need to acclimatize here. Beding is a beautiful Sherpa village located in its own miniature valley. We can trek around the valley, and hike up to viewpoints at higher altitudes before returning back to the village. On your way, you can see various farms of Barley, Maize, Buckwheat, and potato around the several hamlets of the region. The viewpoints will give an even better view of Gaurishankar and the other mountains in its range. Overnight in Beding.

Day 06: Trek from Beding to Na 4180m
Today’s walk will be short and relatively easy along the level river banks. We will tread on the northern banks of the Rolwaling River. Along the way, we can see mountain views of Chekigo (6257m) and the upper ridgelines of its neighboring mountains. We will also pass along some high-altitude pastures naturally irrigated by the fresh river water. We will soon reach Na, said to be one of the oldest settlements in the region. Na is inhabited only during summer and gives great views of Chugimago (6259) and Chobutse (6685m) peaks. There are also potato fields that surround the few houses in Na. Overnight in Na.

Day 07: Trek from Na to Tsho Rolpa Lake 4540m
We will continue trekking along the river banks. There are many high meadows along the trail with beautiful mountain flowers such as the Edelweiss. Tsho Rolpa is a glacial Lake and leading up to the lake, we will be met by the moraines of two glaciers. We will follow the Rolwaling glacier up to the Lake. Views of Menlung amongst other mountains further up in Tibet can be beautifully witnessed. Tsho Rolpa is the biggest glacial lake in Nepal. The pristine lake waters are walled off immediately by the hills and mountains. From the Lake, we can see great views of Langtang (7227m) in the West and Pachermo Himal (6,273m). If we arrive earlier than expected it’s a good idea to explore or circumambulate the lake. Overnight in Tsho Rolpa Lake.

Day 08: Trek from Tsho Rolpa Lake to Na 4180m
From Tsho Rolpa, we will carefully retrace our steps back down to the village of Na. We will carefully traverse down the Glacier and its moraine back down to the Riverbanks. We will follow the Rolwaling River down to the village of Na. Take some time to comprehend the lifestyle and culture of the people residing in Na. Overnight in Na.

Day 09: Trek from Na to Ramdung Base Camp 5000m
We will have to make an ascent for up to 5 hours. The Trek will soon turn snowy and icy as we will be traveling along the Yalung Glacial moraine. We will arrive at the Yalung Glacier high camp and then forge ahead. From here we will then need to cross the Yalung Danda high pass. From here it’s again a steep ascent up to the Ramdung Basecamp. On the trek up the Rocky glacier leading up to basecamp, there are many great views. The Yalung, Trakarding and the Ramdung Glacier itself can be seen in your surroundings. The mountain views meanwhile are an extensive list that includes Gaurishankar, Menlung, Yalung, Go Shar and Manlung peaks. Overnight in Ramdung base camp.

We will first head up through the Ramdung La pass (5665m), carefully through the snowy surface. From the top, here are great 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains. From here next is the Ramdung high camp along the same snowy and icy landscape. We will climb up steep rocky gullies and traverse on the snowy slopes on our way to the top. The walk will be strenuous and you will also have to tread carefully. Just remember the instructions you are given and you should be at ease, and the experience should be more thrilling. From the top are unobstructed panoramic views of the Himalayas. These include Everest (8848m) itself and the Familiars of Gaurishankar, Melungtse, Trakarding Go Shar, Yalung peak amongst others. As you descend, there are even more varieties of plants and trees on display. The Himalayan views are slowly fleeting as you traverse deep through the forested region. You will spend the night at Simigaon.

Day 14: Trek from Simigaon to Gongar and drive back to Kathmandu
We will descend again through dense sub-tropical and subalpine forest along the Lower Rolwaling River, which is now larger than the upper parts of the trek. The view of Gaurishankar appears again, and fittingly the most iconic peak on our trek will bid us farewell today. From Dongang we will be catching our private vehicle and we will pass through beautiful hilly terrain. We will travel through the Dolakha region and pass villages like Jiri on our way to Kathmandu. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, head to your hotel. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 15: Departure to International Airport.
